Spatial Video Essays and Portals for the Extreme Present

What if there’s no “outside” anymore? No offline. No exit. No clean cut between the room you sit in and the room you scroll into.

What if all there is now, is the present? An “Extreme Present”? The future was once hard to predict. This uncertainty now belongs to the present. Every morning, we wake up and the world has changed yet again, from when we went to sleep a few hours before, in ways we couldn’t have imagined.

[WE’RE IN THE ENDCORE NOW, Shumon Basar]

The future arrives as a clip, a glitch, a loop you can’t stop replaying. THE FEED IS A PLACE THAT EDITS YOU BACK.

The internet is full of doors. You enter through a sound, a hashtag, a comment, a recommendation that feels too specific. And so a portal opens, a new algorithmic logic takes over and the feed becomes a floorplan. You keep moving, you keep watching, you keep waiting for the moment where it makes sense, or maybe not, Perpetuum mobile?

This seminar follows the portal as a practice of entering.

We do research by deep-scrolling (or is it doomscrolling?), till the deepest of the rabbit holes: collecting screenshots, clips, phrases, repeated gestures, interface moments, audio hooks, trying to understand the economies hiding behind them. NPC behavior, slop economies, fake authenticity, lorecore, endcore, algorithmic intimacy, conspiracy theories, meme theology, simulated comfort, simulated panic, doom vibes disguised as comedy. “I’m at rock bottom but the rocks here are so pretty 😀1. Places that feel like jokes until they start shaping how people speak, dress, desire, perform, hide. Stage 5 simulacra: the copy stops needing an original. The simulation holds its own weight.

Inspired by Silvia Dal Dosso The Future Is Now Finally Weird AF, Stage 5 Simulacra video essay (MØRNING + Al Hassan Elwan / POSTPOSTPOST), and the Endcore mood of our time, we build video essays out of fragments. Montage becomes method. Rhythm becomes argument. Editing becomes spatial practice.

Each group explores the format of a short vertical video essay and designs and builds a portal object that holds the screen (phone): a tiny architecture that frames the essay as an entrance.
